4 WOMEN
1000 NAUTICAL MILES
100-YEAR-OLD JOURNEY

A documentary currently in post-production

In the summer of 2022, an all-female crew set out to recreate the nautical voyages from the book, The Curve of Time. Nearly 100 years ago, Muriel Wylie Blanchet, mother, widow, overlooked sea captain, and author of The Curve of Time recounted her harrowing experiences in the Inside Passage of Canada. While traveling north, she encountered remarkable characters, saw unimaginable natural beauty, and braved foul weather. Capi, the documentary film made by the crew, pays homage to this unique part of British Columbia and to Blanchet's work and legacy.

The Documentary

The Inside Passage was the focus of Muriel Wylie Blanchet's exploration for ten summers. Our crew tried to recreate her adventures in just two months. With Blanchet's book as our guide, we set out from the San Juan Islands to discover how the area has changed in the years since her cruises. Our voyage took us through some of the last hold-outs of an increasingly crowded British Columbian coast, where we met a remarkable cast of characters, saw the splendor of the natural world, and felt the impact of being one of the few all-women crews within hundreds of miles. We collected over 60 hours of footage onboard our journey. Now it's time to put it all together.

The Inspiration

Our journey would not have existed if not for Captain (Capi) Blanchet. Born in a time when women’s roles were largely confined to the home, Blanchet was a groundbreaker in the boating world. With her five children and dog in tow, she single-handedly navigated her vessel through some of Canada's most challenging coastal waters. She recorded her whimsical, and at times, harrowing adventures in her book The Curve of Time. A badass and often overlooked captain, Blanchet was never short on adventure. Whether it was running from bears, living off the land, or towing her boat ashore via rowboat, her onboard life was always inspiring. Her book and her gung-ho spirit inspired us to pay homage to her captain and to her travels in our documentary, Capi.

How You Can Help

As we enter the post-production phase, your support will help ensure that the documentary is the best it can be. The crew will be editing the film together, but to truly do justice to Blanchet's legacy we'll need to collaborate with a professional colorist and sound design team. A great way to support us in this process is by making a small one-time donation through Buy Us a Coffee. Even a few dollars can go a long way in making this film a reality.
